I feel like I'm really old! From back in the day compared to now, putting a setup together has gotten pretty simple. I love it!

This is a great post. I also recently graduated in May, and this would have been helpful in my finding a job! I learned similarly to this grad that there is a lot that goes into the job hunt.

It's vital for people to remember that is a lot of work that goes into finding a job, career, or even simply a place to start; I think some forget that there is a lot to do, including the steps your grad went though. Even then, going through these steps doesn't guarantee a job, as can be seen above. This economy, there is no room for error, laziness, or procrastination.

I've also made a post on my blog some tips for finding jobs that covers some of what this grad student wrote about, including more tips about revamping resumes, cover letters, etc. (http://publicrelationsblogger.com/2008/10/job-in-public-relations-tips-for.html)

Thanks for sharing this!

Thanks for the great post. I do agree with many of your tips. I think the one that is truly the most valuable is getting involved. So many recent graduates that I've worked with are expecting things to fall in their lap without doing the leg work.

Today with social media, alumni networks, and other ways to get out in front of others, there's no excuse for sitting on the sidelines. If you put yourself out there, connect with PR agencies, the media, and the like, you're sure to have success. Stay with it!

Response to JustObserving,
I am actually doing an internship with the Department of Commerce/National Weather Service now! That is the paid internship I was referring to in my previous post. I am a STEP intern but my tour ends 4 months after I graduate, so time is running out for me. I am currently a GS-4 and I would like to take a position at the GS-7 level or higher. Although I am not a PR major, I do have my degree in Business Administration-Marketing. Thank you for the advice and I will continue to look at the USAJobs site.

In response to Daniel's comment on this post: Don't forget to look into jobs with the Federal government. You can find job postings at www.USAJOBS.com (currently, there are more than 32,000 vacancies posted). The Feds are definitely hiring in full force right now. Nearly every agency has PR positions (most agencies call their public relations folks -- like me -- "Public Affairs Specialists").

Great post. I hope you find something soon. I've got a few tips on my new blog that might help, and you might also want to follow the Twitter conversations taking place under the hashtags #PRadvice, #jobadvice, and #careeradvice. The weekly Twitter conversation between PR pros and students, the media and bloggers called #journchat is also great (follow @journchat and @PRSarahEvans on Twitter for more info). But it definitely sounds like you are on the right track already. Keep your head up!

I completely understand the frustrations of job searching. I too am a recent graduate and I have been following all the “do’s and don’ts” of the job search but nothing promising has come along yet. Although I am currently in a paid internship I know this job will end soon and that’s why I have continued my search for a new job. I don’t want to take a job with just any company but I’m almost to that point. I mean working is better than not working right? I know I’m a valuable asset to any company I join. If given the opportunity to show my skills to a company I am confident I will exceed their expectations. I know how to be confident but not cocky in interviews, I have placed my resume in countless hands and on countless networking sites, done all the steps to prove my worth as a college graduate, yet I am still unemployed. The truth is businesses aren’t growing and people aren’t retiring so new jobs are hard to come by. Makes me wonder if anyone is getting hired these days…
